Radio Buzz: JetBlue Troubles — 7 Hour Long Tarmac Delay
Imagine it: sitting STRANDED on an airplane for hours on the tarmac at the WRONG airport.
That’s what happened to passengers on a flight from Fort Lauderdale to Newark that got diverted to Hartford.
“It’s a logistical nightmare for that airplane to have been stuck in Hartford as opposed to Newark, where it was supposed to go.”
Aviation Attorney Fred Tecce speaking with Amy and John at WIND in Chicago.
The Captain – continually asking for airport officials to send assistance – telling them he (quote) “can’t seem to get any help from our own company.”
“What that tells me is behind the scenes – JetBlue was trying to get gas on that airplane so they could run the thing back down to Newark. They didn’t want to leave it there. And that goes back and forth for 7 or 8 hours – and these people are kind of a pawn in a bigger game and they get stuck there.”
The Government is now investigating, and will likely fine the airline.
Will the passengers get a chunk of the fine?
“No – unfortunately they won’t see a dime of that money.”
JetBlue — according to Tecce — will be fined under the Passenger Bill of Rights… the airline – can be fined up to 27 thousand dollars… which would total somewhere around 2 and a half million dollars.
And — the whole Passenger Bill of Rights:
“It was really to encourage – for lack of a better term – the airlines to kind of put an end to this.”
Really, the root of what happened here — according to Tecce:
“It was a series of problems and errs brought on by the worst October snowstorm we’ve had in the northeast in years.”
