American Teacher Shot, Killed by Student in Iraq

An American gym teacher is dead, shot and killed by a student at a school in Iraq.  The attack happened in Sulaimaniyah, about 160 miles northeast of Baghdad, in front of a room full of other students.

The teacher was killed in a crowded classroom when a student pulled out a gun, shooting the teacher, before killing himself as other children fled in panic.  Eyewitnesses say there had been a row, but it’s not clear what it was about, or if the student – who’s thought to be 18 years old – had another motive.

The attack happened in Iraq’s Kurdish region, where violent attacks on Americans are rare, at a school where American staff regularly teach.
