UPDATE: The San Francisco supervisor who told a newspaper that he consulted a ouija board to talk to the late Harvey Milk says it was all a joke…

The San Franciso Chronicle reported that during a debate over whether to support naming a Navy vessel after assassinated city leader Harvey Milk, one supervisor consulted a ouija board. Supervisor John Avalos told The Chronicle he got a response from the board.

After the story went viral though, Avalos said he was surprised. He went past the Chronicle’s City Insider office and asked if they knew he was joking. They said they did and assumed everyone else did too.

Avalos says it shows the media just wants to prove San Francisco is wacky. But his ouija words were repeated by news outlets all over, including by yours truly.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors was debating a non-binding resolution on whether to back a Navy plan to name a vessel after Harvey Milk. He was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the country, and he was assassinated. While some didn’t want to support it, citing Milk’s opposition to war, Supervisor John Avalos decided to consult Milk himself, through a ouija board. He told the San Francisco Chronicle that in front of him and city aides, the board spelled out ‘good riddance DADT’ agreeing that Milk would’ve opposed ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’. Supervisors voted to support the resolution, nine to two.
