A Day of Remembrance: Memorial Day 2012 [VIDEO]
The nation pauses on Memorial Day to remember those who served, and died, protecting our nation and our freedom.
FOX News Radio’s Jeff Monosso reports:
From the Tomb of the Unknowns in our nation’s capital, to Fleet Week here in New York City, to small towns throughout the country where volunteers have placed flags at the graves of the fallen .
(Observer) “You look around and you think about all the people that died and all the wars we’ve had, it kind of humbles you.”

On state street in Chicago, one of the many memorial day parades happening across the country.
And in Los Angeles a Memorial Day Walk for Warriors also taking place, an event that supports the transitioning of our soldiers from war to the life we all enjoy here at home.

FOX’s Steve Centanni reports from Washington:
This Memorial Day Parade down Constitution Avenue in the nation’s capital is a tribute to the war veterans of Iraq. That war ended last December, and this is the first public tribute to those troops.
Not a ticker-tape parade in New York, rejected because Americans are still fighting in Afghanistan, but a warm welcome home nonetheless.
And it’s not just Iraq. Those who served in all America’s wars are being honored here today.

(Obama) “Because each of them loved this country and everything it stands for more than life itself.”
The President calling on Americans to remember those who mourn this Memorial Day.
(Obama) “And as a country all of can and should ask how we can help you shoulder a burden that nobody should have to bear alone.”
Later the President attended a special commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

The top U.S. Commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen read a letter during a Memorial Day service here in Kabul from a 23-year-old soldier to his family before he was killed in January of this year in Helmand Province.
Marine Sergeant William Stacey, who was on his fourth deployment wrote in the letter that was to be read in the event of his death, “There will be child who will live because men left the security they enjoyed in their home to come to his.”
At least 1,900 members of the U.S. military have been killed in Afghanistan since the U.S.-lead invasion in 2011.
